Ecdysterone, also known as Beta-ecdysterone or 20-hydroxyecdysone, is a naturally occurring ecdysteroid found in molting insects, some animals that live in water, and some plants. Commercially, it is extracted from the root of cyanotis arachnoidea. It is a principle hormone of invertebrate. It can enhance cells metabolism and promote differentiation of epidermal cells. Also, ecdysterone has been used in skin-care products, because it can improve dry skin and resist skin aging. At present, it is mainly applied in cosmetics，health care, and breeding fields.

Cyanotis arachnoidea also called cyanotis vaga, Tradescantia yaga Lour, is a kind of perennial herb. The plant is about 15-30 cm high; roots are sturdy with pulp; flower is purple with yellow stamen; flower season is from June to September. It is abundant in Yunnan province of China; the distribution is mainly in the altitude from 1100 to 2700 m. It is a traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of rheumatism.
